Bank partnerships: Has 2003 showed growth or decline in this application?

CampusIDNews Staff   ||   Jan 01, 2003  ||   ,

Early this year, CR80News published its first-ever in depth review of banking and campus cards. In the issue, we profiled the major financial institution’s driving the relationships with campus card programs and highlighted many of the country’s leading projects. In an effort to spot trends and determine if our editorial team was correct and that banking relationships are indeed returning to a position of prominence in the card market, we revisited that article. We contacted the financial institutions profiled in the March 2003 issue to see what had developed in the 8 months since the article was published. By all indications, banking partnerships seem to be on the rise.

We spoke with seven financial institutions considered active players in the campus card market first in March 2003 and again in October 2003. The institutions interviewed were Higher One, PNC Bank, SunTrust, TCF Bank, US Bank, Wachovia, and Wells Fargo. We compared the client lists for each institution at those two points in time. The following summarizes the results of that evaluation.

In March the total partnerships amassed by the seven banks totaled 47 institutions of higher education. In October, that number had increased to 60 partnerships, an increase of nearly 30% in just eight months. Equally impressive, not one of the banks reported losing a client during the time period.

Two of the institutions, Higher One and US Bank, accounted for the majority of the added partnerships. Higher One experienced the most dramatic growth, rising from just two clients in March to seven in October. US Bank, however, achieved the largest number of new client additions adding six and bringing their total to 19 institutions.

With 19 campus card partnerships under contract, US Bank has emerged as the leader in campus card banking partnerships. But while Wachovia did not experience the same rate of new client acquisition during the period, the bank did add 1 client bringing their total to an impressive14 card program partnerships. PNC Bank also added one new client, Seton Hall University, bringing their total to nine.

The chart on the following pages show the results of the survey and highlight the campus clients of these seven leaders providing financial partnerships for card programs.
