While NFC is thought of as a payment tool, college campuses have been exploring the technology for other aspects. Quinnipiac, Villanova and Arizona State University have been testing the technology for physical access control.

A primary obstacle for accepting the campus card for payment transactions has been an expensive buy in for point-of-sale payment technology. Now, however, some universities are recognizing the need to accept payments at places other than a traditional point of sale, and campus card providers are stepping up to provide inexpensive, portable systems that can be used all over campus.

Most campuses find it necessary to accept a mix of payment options, including open-loop credit and debit cards. But while open-loop payments might have once only been accepted at the bookstore for major purchases, they are now accepted at an increasing number of locations around campus, from dining halls to vending machines.

The University of Tennessee unveiled an off-campus program with 24 area businesses. The university worked with a third-party vendor to arrange agreements with restaurants, retail, and vendors.

The use of biometrics on campus is nothing new. Back in the 90s campuses were using hand geometry readers for access for residence halls. But use of the technology is increasing as a way to ease access to dining halls as well as access to dorms and other areas.
